UIC Prepares To Host 2001 MCC Baseball Championship

Chicago, Ill. - The University of Illinois at Chicago's Les Miller Field will play host to the 2001 Midwestern Collegiate Conference Baseball Championship, which runs from May 17-20, with the Flames entering the post-season action as the #2 seed. UIC, which wrapped up the regular-season with a 30-26 overall mark and a 13-7 record in MCC play, will face #5 Cleveland State at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday in the double-elimination tournament. Top-seeded UW-Milwaukee will take on #6 Detroit in the day's early game at 11:00 a.m. while #3 Wright State/#4 Butler will follow the Flames at 7:00 p.m. After starting the year out with a 3-16 record, UIC has come on strong since to go 27-10, including a 7-3 mark against Big Ten programs. Against Cleveland State, in their first league action of the year, the Flames swept the four-game series behind the hot bats of Chuck Peters (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) and J.P. Moran (Burlington, Wis./Westosha Central). Peters batted .636 with three home runs, seven RBI, three runs scored and a slugging percentage of 1.545 while Moran compiled a .538 batting average with five RBI and three runs. If the Flames can get by Cleveland State in the first round, they would take on the winner of #3 Wright State/#4 Butler at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 18. Game times for Thursday, Friday and Saturday are 11:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. while the championship game on Sunday, May 20, is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. Winner of the MCC Tournament receives a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
