Chicago, Ill.- The UIC men's basketball team rode a hot-shooting first half to build a lead it would never relinquish in a 70-59 victory over Youngstown State in the first round of the 2008 Horizon League Tournament at the UIC Pavilion on Tuesday night.

The fourth-seeded Flames (17-14) advance to face eighth-seeded Loyola in the quarterfinals of the league tourney at Butler's Hinkle Fieldhouse this Friday at 7 p.m. Central.

UIC shot 58.3 percent (14-for-24) from the field in the opening period, using a 10-0 run that took less than two minutes in the early stages of the game to build a lead that would expand to as much as 16 entering the break.

The Flames would lead by as many as 19 points just four minutes into the second half before Youngstown State (9-21) would begin to chip away. The Penguins chopped their deficit to nine with just under four minutes remaining, but UIC pulled away with a 7-2 spurt that quelled the YSU comeback attempt.

Robert Bush scored a team-high 14 points, while Josh Mayo added 13 and Spencer Stewart tallied 10. Scott VanderMeer pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Penguins' Byron Davis scored 22 points to lead all scorers.

UIC improved to 12-2 on its home court this season.
