Josh Mayo Named To All-Horizon League First Team

Chicago, Ill.- UIC junior guard Josh Mayo (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville H.S.) was selected to the 2007-08 All-Horizon League First Team, the league office announced on Monday (Mar. 3). Junior center Scott VanderMeer (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central H.S.) was also honored with a spot on the league's All-Defensive Team for the second straight season. Mayo has led the Flames in scoring all year, averaging 17.6 points per game in 30 contests to rank second in the Horizon League. The third-year guard is one of the nation's top three-point shooters, hitting from downtown at a rate of 48.6 percent (90-for-185). Mayo led NCAA Division I in three-point field goal percentage for six consecutive weeks from Jan. 10 until Feb. 21 and currently shoots at the fourth-best three-point field goal clip in the country. Mayo is UIC's top free throw shooter (84.6 percent) and is second on the team in total assists (102) and assists per game (3.2 apg). He has scored 30-plus points on two occasions and has scored in double figures in 25 straight games, the longest such streak in the Horizon League. Joining Mayo on the All-Horizon League First Team are Butler guards A.J. Graves and Mike Green, the 2008 Horizon League Player of the Year, Cleveland State forward J'Nathan Bullock and Wright State guard Vaughn Duggins. VanderMeer leads the Horizon League in total blocks (80) and blocked shots per game (2.7 bpg). The 7-foot junior has set new UIC blocked shot records for a single-season (111 in 2006-07) and a career (191) in just two years in a Flames uniform. He also leads the Horizon League in rebounding at 7.4 boards per game. All-League and All-Newcomer awards are voted upon by Horizon League head coaches and sports information directors plus selected media. The All-Defensive Team, Defensive Player of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year are selected by the league's head coaches only. UIC begins the 2008 Horizon League Tournament this Tuesday, March 4 against Youngstown State at the UIC Pavilion at 7 p.m.
