Indianapolis, Ind. - Mike Savegnago captured the Horizon League decathlon championship on Saturday afternoon and gave the UIC men's track and field team a head start heading into this week's championship meet.

Savegnago won his second career decathlon title by earning a career-best 6,104 points. The junior also tallied career-best marks in the 110-meter hurdles (:16.41) and in the javelin throw (41.61m).

Terell Williams, the 2007 decathlon champion, finished runner-up in the event posting 5,867 points.

Mike Pawelek and Rupesh Manam rounded out the field with a fifth and sixth place finish.

UIC totaled a combined 21 points and will begin this week's Horizon League championships in first place.

The Flames will head to Youngstown, Ohio on Thursday and Friday (May 8-9) for the remainder of the league championships.
