Shreveport, La. - The UIC women's gymnastics team was crowned the 2008 Midwest Independent Conference champions at Centenary's Gold Dome on Friday night.

The Flames tallied a 193.850 to capture their sixth title in the last seven seasons and 11th all-time.

Southeast Missouri State finished in second with a score of 192.025 and host Centenary came in third with a 191.775. Texas Women's University (191.075) and Illinois State (190.775) rounded out the field.

Annie Kachman led the Flames as she won her first conference all-around championship with a combined 38.975, edging out SEMO's Sandra Blake (38.750). The co-captain also tied with Blake and teammate DeAvera Todd to share the floor exercise title with identical scores of 9.875.

After winning the state vault title last weekend, Todd continued where she left off and won her first career conference vault championship with an impressive 9.875. The MIC Gymnast of the Week also had a solid all-around performance, placing third overall with a 38.550.

Co-captain Zandre Labuschagne earned All-MIC First Team honors for her runner-up finish on the balance beam scoring a 9.650. Labuschagne also tied for fourth place on the uneven bars with teammate Kayleigh Kremer with identical 9.750 scores.

Other performances highlighting the night for the Flames included fourth place finishes for Karen Morales on the balance beam (9.625) and Sarah Murray on the floor exercise (9.850). Both Morales and Murray earned All-MIC Second Team honors.

At the conclusion of the meet, the celebrations continued for the Flames as Kachman was awarded with her second consecutive MIC Athlete of the Year accolade and Todd received the MIC Newcomer of the Year honor.

"I'm really proud of how well we competed," said co-head coach Peter Jansson. "It's a great feeling!"

UIC will wait until Monday morning to learn its NCAA postseason fate.
