Softball Drills Three Home Runs In 8-4 Win Over Louisville

Bloomington, Ind. - Melissa Marinacci's grand slam in the first inning paved the way to an 8-4 triumph over Louisville on Friday afternoon in the IU Classic hosted by Indiana University. Marinacci was 2-for-3 for the Flames with five RBI, two runs and two home runs. Brittany Dixon was 2-for-3 with one double, while Sarah Clynes notched her fourth homer of the season. Clynes moves to 5-10 in the cirlce after 6.1 innings of work. UIC (8-18) was hot at the plate in the top of the first inning. Clynes drilled a solo shot to right field on the first pitch of the game for an early 1-0 lead. After Louisville pitcher Kassie Stanfill walked the next three batters, Marinacci stepped up to the plate a blasted a grand slam into the scoreboard for a five-run advantage. The Flames added a run in the top of the second on a throwing error by the UL shortstop with the bases loaded. Marinacci hammered her second home run of the game in the top of the third inning for a 7-0 lead. Louisville got on the board in the bottom-half of the third on a UIC throwing error, sending two runners home. UL cut the deficit to three runs (7-4) in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer to left field from Chelsea Bemis. The Cardinals attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Sarah Totten singled to right field, eventually moving to second after an illegal pitch from UIC reliever Whitney Orellana. The freshman hit two straight batters to load the bases and put the tying run at the plate, but shortstop Brooke Frydendall made a line drive over-the-shoulder catch off the bat of Kristen Wadwell for the win.
