Softball Scores Seven Late Against Penguins For First Round Victory
May 8, 2008
Chicago, Ill. - Horizon League Newcomer of the Year Alicia Abbott's three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning paved the way to the UIC softball team's 7-0 victory over Youngstown State on Thursday morning in the opening round of the Horizon League Softball Tournament at Loyola Softball Park. The fifth-seeded Flames (23-31) advance to face No. 2 Valparaiso (30-17) tonight at 6 p.m. as tournament action continues in Rogers Park. Abbott broke open a scoreless game in the fifth when she stepped up with two runners on and nobody out and launched her first collegiate home run off Penguins starter Becky Hibner. That one swing would give UIC all the offense it would need as pitcher Sarah Clynes tossed a two-hitter en route to her sixth shutout of the season. Clynes, who also fanned four batters in the win, improved to 14-17 in the circle. UIC would go on to tack on four insurance runs in the sixth inning with Lauren Brennan, Clynes and Brooke Frydendall driving in runs during the rally that staked the Flames to a 7-0 lead. Hibner suffered the loss in the circle for Youngstown State (12-36) to fall to 1-9 on the year.
